After several days of massive wildfires in the area around Athens, milder winds have led to the fires being under control on Tuesday evening. However, high temperatures above 30 degrees during the day mean that they can easily flare up again with gusts of wind.
Although all more aggressive wildfires are now extinguished, there are hundreds of areas with slowly smoldering fires remaining that require the rescue service's focus, reports news agency AP.
Greece, after the country requested that the EU's civil protection mechanism be activated, has received reinforcement from other countries. Helicopters, firefighting aircraft, and hundreds of firefighters were sent from France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Serbia, and Romania on Tuesday.
According to BBC, over 40,000 hectares of land have burned.
