In the brief week that has passed since author Han Kang won the Nobel Prize in Literature, over a million copies of her books have been sold in her home country of South Korea, reports the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

According to Yonhap, this is a record-high figure for book sales in the country.

When Japanese author Haruki Murakami's "1Q84" was released in South Korea, it was described as extremely successful, selling around 600,000 copies in two months.

Han Kang, born 1970, is the first South Korean author ever to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. She began her career by publishing poems and made her prose debut in 1995 with "Love of Yeosu".

The major international breakthrough came with the novel "The Vegetarian", which was published in 2007.
