Harris on Trump's debate tactics: Stop playing games

The Republican Party's presidential candidate, former President Donald Trump, claims to have agreed with the right-wing channel Fox News to debate against the Democrats' Kamala Harris on September 4. Trump should stop playing games, reads the response from Harris' campaign.

Donald Trump writes in a post on his social media platform Truth Social that the debate on September 4 is to be held in Pennsylvania, an important swing state.

Vice President Harris had previously stated that she was ready to debate against Trump. But it has been unclear how she stands on September 4 and Fox News.

"Donald Trump is scared and trying to back out of the debate he previously agreed to, and is running directly to Fox News to save him," is the response from Harris's campaign communications chief Michael Tyler.

"Stop playing"

"He must stop playing games and come to the debate on September 10 as he has already agreed to," continues Tyler according to AFP.

Earlier this year, Trump and President Joe Biden, who was then the Democrats' likely candidate, agreed on two debates, on June 27 and September 10. Biden's disastrous performance in the first led to him announcing that he would not stand for re-election – instead endorsing Harris.

Since then, it has been unclear whether the debate plan still applies. Harris has pushed for a debate at campaign appearances and urged Trump to direct his criticism "directly to her".

According to Trump, the debate on September 10, which was to be held on the ABC channel, has been cancelled since Biden is no longer a candidate and he himself has an ongoing legal dispute with ABC.

Interviewing candidates

Kamala Harris became the formal presidential candidate on Friday after gathering sufficient support from the party's delegates in a digital vote.

Harris's campaign organization will interview six potential candidates for the vice presidential post over the weekend, reports AP.

These are said to be Governor of Pennsylvania Josh Shapiro, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz, Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker, Governor of Kentucky Andy Beshear, and Transportation Minister Pete Buttigieg.

The announcement of who it will be is expected on Monday.
