Harris: Trump "desecrated" a military cemetery

The Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump "desecrated" through his actions a military cemetery earlier in the week. That's what his rival Kamala Harris believes.

"Let me be clear: the former president desecrated sacred ground in order to score political points", she writes in a post on X.

The notable event took place on August 26 when Trump and his staff visited the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, where they were invited by relatives of soldiers killed in connection with the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

The former president's staff was allegedly warned that political campaigning is not allowed on the premises. Despite this, they both took photos and filmed, and in one photo from the site, a smiling Trump is seen giving a thumbs up to the camera as he stands together with relatives of a fallen soldier.

Pushed aside

When an employee at the cemetery pointed out that the behavior was forbidden, they were allegedly pushed. On Thursday, the US military issued a statement confirming that a cemetery employee was "brusquely pushed aside" after telling Trump's staff to stop filming.

The Trump campaign, which claims to have been granted special permission, has rejected the allegations, describing the employee as a "despicable" individual with mental health issues. In the military's statement, they say instead that the person in question "acted professionally" and call the incident "unfortunate".

Criticizes Biden and Harris

"If there's one thing we Americans can all agree on, it's that our veterans, active-duty soldiers, and their families should be honored, never disrespected, and always treated with the greatest respect and gratitude", Harris writes in her X post.

Trump has repeatedly criticized President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for their handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan, claiming that he himself would have handled it better.
