High Pressure Saves Midsummer Weather

The forecast has been uncertain earlier. But now it looks like it will be sunny on Midsummer's Eve – in nearly the whole country. The party tent that many may have wondered if it's needed in case of rain will probably be needed most to protect from the sun, says Erik Höjgård-Olsen at the Met Office.

The forecast has been uncertain earlier.

But now it looks like there will be sunshine on Midsummer's Eve – in nearly the whole country.

The party tent that many may have wondered if it would rain might be needed most to protect from the sun, says Erik Höjgård-Olsen at the SMHI.

This is the classic Midsummer question.

Will it be a picnic lunch outside? Or must the whole party be prepared to suddenly dash in because the sky opens up?

After a somewhat uncertain forecast earlier in the week, the SMHI now dares to promise sunshine for large parts of the country and temperatures of up to 25 degrees in some areas.

During the night, a high-pressure ridge has grown over large parts of the country. It will give sunny weather on Thursday – and on Midsummer's Eve, says meteorologist Erik Höjgård-Olsen.

We have been waiting for this high-pressure ridge and it has been uncertain how far up in the country it would reach. But now it's here.

Sunny weather

The high pressure seems at least initially on Midsummer's Eve to give sunny weather in the southern half of Sweden and in the coastal areas of Norrland.

In Norrland's inland and mountainous regions, the day will start quite cloudy according to the SMHI's forecast. Along the coast from Luleå and northwards, there may also be some afternoon showers.

But during the day, the sunny weather will hold in the southern half of the country. In Svealand, especially the eastern provinces, and Dalarna, some cumulus clouds will form. They may grow a bit, but it doesn't look like they will release any precipitation.

In Värmland and further south over Götaland, Midsummer's Eve looks like it will stay sunny until the evening.

A small setback

For those who like warmth and sunshine, the forecast also looks really promising for next week when a new high-pressure ridge arrives with temperatures around 25 degrees.

But.

There will be a small setback in between.

A low-pressure system that is on its way north from the continent means that the forecast for Midsummer's Day includes rain in many areas.

Whole Götaland and Svealand will have to expect passing rain and embedded, there may be some heavier precipitation, says Erik Höjgård-Olsen.

But it will be quite temporary, for already on Sunday, the rain will move away again.
