The police, who have repeatedly appeared in media contexts in cases involving gang crime, have denied having knowledge of the crimes and claim to have only done what they could to combat organized crime.
According to the Västmanland District Court, he should have realized that the source was involved in drug-related crime, but it is not clear that he did. He is therefore convicted of committing the offense through negligence. He is only convicted of ordinary misconduct, not gross misconduct as the prosecutor had requested.
Had he been convicted of gross misconduct, he would have been dismissed, according to a statement from the Disciplinary Board of the Police Authority.
The story came to light when police found 15 kilograms of hashish during a traffic stop in Västerås in January. A woman was driving the car and on her mobile phone, they found traces leading to a garage where a further nearly 50 kilograms of hashish were later found.
The 29-year-old man who owned the garage contacted the police and stated that he was an informant for the accused police officer, claiming that the latter was aware of the drug possession. The police officer has denied this and allegedly cut ties with the source when the suspicions arose.
The man and woman are sentenced to three and two years in prison, respectively, for gross drug offenses.
