A high-ranking military leader in the Iran-backed Shia militia Hezbollah has been killed in an Israeli attack near the coastal city of Tyre in southern Lebanon.

In response to the attack, 100 rockets have been fired at two posts in the Golan Heights, annexed by Israel, according to the Islamist extremist group.

The leader who was killed in the Israeli attack was Mohammad Naameh Nasser, also known as "Abu Naameh", according to a statement from Hezbollah. He is said to have been a commander responsible for one of three areas in southern Lebanon, according to an anonymous source within the Islamist extremist group for the AP news agency.

The Hezbollah leader is said to have been killed in an attack on a car. In a video published by local media, smoke can be seen rising from a burnt-out car.

Naameh is the highest-ranking commander in the Iran-backed organization to be killed since Taleb Sami Abdallah was killed in an Israeli air strike on June 11.

Israel and the militia group Hezbollah have almost daily exchanged fire since the Gaza war began as a result of the terrorist-designated Hamas attack on Israel in October last year.

The Israeli military has not commented on the attack.
