Hysén: "He's the one I have to thank for everything"

The football world is mourning Sven-Göran Eriksson. It's bloody awful, even though you've known about it for a while, you're never prepared for something like this, says Glenn Hysén about his old coach and friend.

Glenn Hysén got his breakthrough as a young player in IFK Göteborg under Svennis.

I have him to thank for everything. He bet on us young ones when he came to Blåvitt. How my career would have gone without him, one can wonder, says Hysén and continues:

There is no kinder person. He never raised his voice for anything, no matter how bad a match went.

It was a tentative start in Göteborg for Svennis. But everything would lead to the historic Uefa Cup title in 1982.

Several years after the success in Göteborg, Svennis and Glenn Hysén's paths crossed again, this time in Fiorentina in Italy. But the successes had not changed Svennis.

He was exactly the same person with the same mentality and happy humor, says Glenn Hysén.

Praised at Gamla Ullevi

The last time they saw each other was together with the team from 1982 when Svennis was praised at Gamla Ullevi in April this year.

It feels nice that one got to be part of it. To get to meet him after the illness notice. But there were no sorrows then, says Glenn Hysén.

Lars Lagerbäck was Sweden's national team coach at the same time as Svennis was based in England. He tells about what Svennis meant for Sweden as a football nation.

No Swedish coach has been through as much. I generally don't think one should use too strong adjectives, but he had an incredible coaching career.

The most important thing about Svennis is that he did fantastically as a coach, and that he was always a sympathetic and kind person, with clever Värmland humor, says Lagerbäck.

Condolences from the British Royal Family

The British Royal Family also sends their condolences.

Prince William writes on X:

"Sorry to hear that Sven-Göran Eriksson has passed away. I met him several times as English national team coach and was always struck by his charisma and passion for the sport. My thoughts go to his family and friends. He was a true gentleman."

Eriksson is also praised by Lazio, the Rome club he led to the league title:

"Thanks for everything you've done for us, mister."
