Julianne Moore is not afraid of death – she just doesn't want life to end.

I don't think about it in terms of fear. I think more about it as losing something, she says to TT and states that she is living a fantastic life with a family she loves.

The topic comes up during the interview about Pedro Almodóvar's new film "The room next door" which deals with assisted dying. The severely cancer-stricken Martha (Tilda Swinton) is thinking of taking her life. She asks her friend Ingrid (Julianne Moore) to accompany her to a house in the forest and keep her company during her last weeks.

"Right to decide"

Has the film changed Julianne Moore's opinion on assisted dying?

No, I believe we all have the right to decide over our own bodies, she says but states that the freedom is also affected by political decisions.

But I know what I think, what my views on ethics and morality are. I have a lot of life experience, I've been through a lot.

When Julianne Moore received an email from Almodóvar asking if she wanted to be in the film, she initially thought it was a joke. But when they met in Madrid to discuss it, she soon signed the contract.

Filming with an interpreter

Almodóvar speaks only a little English, and the filming (which despite the film taking place in the USA, mostly took place in and just outside Madrid) was largely done with an interpreter.

But it didn't pose any difficulties, just a different way of communicating. Then Pedro listened to the musicality of our lines all the time. Language is not just words, it's also sound.

"The room next door" is not just about assisted dying, but also about female friendship.

It was so exciting that Pedro highlighted female friendship, that he tells the story of two strong women. It's so rare. If a film has two female main characters, they're usually enemies or competitors, says Julianne Moore.
