Luxury Yacht Manufacturer: They died like animals in cages

The seventh and final victim – the daughter of IT magnate Mike Lynch – has been found after the luxury yacht accident off Sicily. The sailboat's fate depended on a series of fatal mistakes, claims the head of the Italian boat manufacturer. They fell into a trap, he says.

Question marks are piling up after the luxury yacht's fatal capsizing off Sicily last week: how could the giant boat sink to the bottom of the sea within a quarter of an hour?

The sailboat was "one of the safest boats in the world" and "practically unsinkable", claims Giovanni Costantino, founder of Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi where Bayesian was built in 2008, in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

Everything that happened reveals a very long chain of mistakes, he says.

The bad weather that caused the boat to capsize was in accordance with the weather forecast. All passengers should have gathered at one point, with all the boat's doors and hatches closed, claims Costantino.

Instead, it took in water while all guests were still in their cabins. They were trapped – the poor things were like animals in cages.

15 people were rescued from the boat, one was found dead shortly after the shipwreck, and six more were sucked into the depths, including IT magnate Mike Lynch and his daughter.

All missing persons except Lynch's daughter had been found outside Sicilian Porticello on Thursday. On Friday, another body was found, which was identified as the 18-year-old in the evening.
