A man has been shot by police near the festival area for the European Championship in Hamburg, reports German media.
The Hamburg police state that the man was armed with an axe. According to the German newspaper Bild, he attacked football fans and police during the Dutch fan march.
The man is said to have had a Molotov cocktail in his backpack, and the police assume that he wanted to set it off inside the festival area.
An eyewitness stated that the man took aim at a group of people when he came running out of a kebab restaurant, shouting.
The police first used pepper spray and then warning shots to stop the man. The man was seriously injured after being shot by the police.
The man is believed to have acted alone, according to the Hamburg police.
