Men in Crisis is the theme at Stockholm Film Festival

Strong women – but also men in crisis are the theme of Stockholm's film festival this year. We have chosen to direct the spotlight on the contemporary man and all his inner turmoil, says programme manager Beatrice Karlsson.

The Palme d'Or winner "Anora" with acclaimed Mikey Madison opens, Angelina Jolie's film about Maria Callas closes, and in between comes the star-studded "Emilia Perez" with Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez as the "mid-film".

The Stockholm Film Festival highlights strong female portraits as the main attraction of this year's edition, taking place between 6 and 17 November.

"Maybe-men"

At the same time, the festival's theme is "Men in Crisis". There are many films on this theme right now.

The cultural pages have debated about the "maybe-men" and incels who have also, in some cases, become violent. It's a real problem that exists in our time, says Beatrice Karlsson.

Among the films on the theme are Jason Schwartzman as a Jewish cantor in crisis in "Between the temples" and "Homegrown", a documentary about internet-radicalized Trump supporters.

Actor Jesse Eisenberg receives this year's Stockholm Achievement Award and comes to the festival to show his latest film "A real pain", which he also directed.

He has also been a bit of a face for this crisis-stricken man in his films, for example in "Social network", and the theme is also addressed in "A real pain".

The Stockholm Film Festival is also making a push for TV series and will premiere episodes of several upcoming productions.

This year, we wanted to capture this trend that exists where film directors are also moving into series storytelling and how TV series have become increasingly cinematic.

Among others, Daniel Espinosa's "Helicopter Heist" (Netflix), "Whiskey on the rocks" by Björn Stein (SVT), and "Vargasommar" by Jesper Ganslandt (TV4) will be shown.

The Stockholm Film Festival is celebrating its 35th anniversary and is marking it, among other things, with tickets for 35 kronor for certain morning screenings.

Here are five notable films from the program:

"Anora".

Sean Baker's film about a stripper (Mikey Madison) who gets involved with a spoiled son of a Russian oligarch won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

"Emilia Pérez".

Jacques Audiard's film is described as a mafia musical about transgender experiences. Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez play two of the lead roles.

"Hacking hate".

Swedish Simon Klose's documentary depicts how journalist My Vingren tries to expose hate crimes by right-wing extremist groups.

"Blitz".

Drama about a woman (Saoirse Ronan) who, during the bombing of London during World War II, sends her son away amidst the devastation. Director Steve McQueen will attend the festival.

"Maria".

Angelina Jolie plays the lead role as opera diva Maria Callas towards the end of her life.
