Million Rain over Rahm after Criticized Move

One of the world's richest athletes just became even wealthier. The Spaniard Jon Rahm took home the victory in the heavily criticized LIV tour. It earned him 225 new million kronor.

The former world number one in golf held off his only challenger for the title, Chilean Joaquín Niemann, when the LIV tour ended on Monday, Swedish time.

The total victory in the lucrative tour, founded by the Saudi state, is worth nearly 185 million kronor. Jon Rahm's win in the final tournament at Bolingbrook Golf Course outside Chicago – three strokes ahead of Niemann and Sergio García – earned him an additional 40 million kronor.

"Really nervous"

I was really nervous when I woke up. I wanted to put on a good show and hold off. I'm just glad to have played as well as I did, says Jon Rahm according to AFP.

Rahm, a two-time major winner, joined the criticized LIV tour in December last year. The Spaniard has been top ten in all tournaments except one, and won two of the last three.

The LIV season ends next week with a team competition in Dallas. After that, Rahm hopes to participate in three European Tour events to remain eligible for the Ryder Cup next year.

Second-highest paid athlete

The problem is that the European Tour, now DP World Tour, has fined him 20 million kronor for switching to LIV. Rahm has, however, announced that he will not pay, and is said to have appealed the decision to be able to participate in the three European Tour events.

Jon Rahm is currently the world's second-highest paid athlete after football star Cristiano Ronaldo, with an annual income of 218 million dollars (over 2 billion kronor).
