Nearly 20,000 people lost their driver's license during the first half of 2024. This is an increase of 2.6 percent compared to the same period the year before, according to new figures from the Transport Agency.

The most common reason for losing one's driver's license is speeding, but the number is decreasing compared to the previous year.

However, more people are losing their driver's license due to drunk driving or drug-related drunk driving compared to last year, an increase of 2.1 percent.

At the same time, the number of people who have had their driver's license revoked due to medical reasons has increased over several years. During the first half of 2024, 3,600 driver's licenses were revoked, which is the highest figure ever for the period.

"We are getting older in Sweden and it is very possible that this could be a contributing factor to the increase. The large number of revocations on medical grounds occurs from 75 years and upwards", says Mikael Andersson, press chief at the Transport Agency, in a press release.
