Ukraine has declared national mourning on Tuesday after Monday's large-scale Russian air attack, where around 40 people died, including several children, and nearly 200 were injured.

Deliberately targeting hospitals is a war crime, states a UN representative.

Among other things, the largest children's hospital Ochmatdyt in Kiev was hit, where two people died. The search for survivors continued on Tuesday morning. At least two dead and over 50 injured have been reported from the hospital.

There is a high probability that the children's hospital was directly hit by a Russian missile, despite Russia's denial, according to the UN.

"Alarming pattern"

The tone was sharp against Moscow during an emergency meeting in the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

Deliberately targeting protected hospitals is a war crime that perpetrators must be held accountable for, says Joyce Msuya, Acting Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.

These events are part of a deeply alarming pattern of systematic attacks where healthcare facilities and other civilian infrastructure are being damaged across Ukraine.

Russia claimed on Monday that the destruction was caused by Ukrainian air defense.

We repeat that we do not attack civilian targets, says Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday.

Flags at half-mast

In total, over 40 missiles of various types are said to have been fired in the attacks, which were carried out during the day. Up to 100 buildings are said to have been hit in several cities.

On Tuesday, flags were flown at half-mast and all entertainment events were cancelled in Ukraine.

"We will continue our work to increase the protection of our cities and communities from Russian terror. Decisions will be made. The world has the strength required for this", wrote Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj on social media.

Meanwhile, Russia claims that four people have died in Ukrainian attacks in the southern Russian border region of Belgorod in the past 24 hours.

On Monday afternoon, Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina played in Wimbledon wearing a black band to honor the victims of the attack earlier in the day.

It was not easy to focus on the match today. Since this morning, it has been difficult to read the news. Going out on the court was extremely difficult, she said in an interview after the match.

May was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine in almost a year, according to a new report, writes BBC.
