On Saturday morning, a small boat overloaded with migrants sent out a distress signal about engine problems off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France. Nearly 90 people were on board.
The small child was found dead in the boat. According to prosecutor Guirec Le Bras, the child had been crushed to death.
Another tragedy occurred off the coast of Calais. There, three people, two men and a woman in her 30s, died on a boat overloaded with migrants.
According to French authorities, they had been crushed and probably drowned in the water that was in the boat.
"The smugglers have these people's lives on their conscience and our government will intensify the fight against these gangs that enrich themselves by organizing these deadly transports", writes France's Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau on X.
"It is frightening that more lives have been lost in the channel today, including a small child, because criminal smuggling gangs continue to organize these dangerous boat crossings", writes Britain's Interior Minister Yvette Cooper on X.
So far this year, around 50 migrants have died in the English Channel.
