At least six people have died in the Caribbean in Hurricane Beryl, the strongest to hit the area in 20 years.

On Wednesday, the storm is expected to hit Jamaica hard, where a curfew has been imposed.

Beryl left devastation in its wake as it swept through the Caribbean. At least six people are reported to have died on the Caribbean islands and in northern Venezuela.

Grenada's Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell says the situation in the island state is dire.

There is no power and there has been almost total destruction of homes and buildings on the island. The roads are impassable, in many cases due to the large amount of debris lying over them, he says.

The hurricane, which was upgraded to category five on a five-point scale on Tuesday, has now been downgraded to a four.

On Wednesday, it is expected to hit Jamaica with life-threatening wind speeds, and residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to prepare for evacuation. The country's Prime Minister Andrew Holness decided late on Tuesday evening local time to impose a nationwide curfew from Wednesday morning to Wednesday evening.

This is to ensure everyone's safety during the storm, says Holness in an Instagram video clip.
