Muted microphones when Harris meets Trump in debate

There will be a pause in the microphones in the highly anticipated, first and televised debate between the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and the Democrats' Kamala Harris on September 10.

Harris has announced to TV channel ABC, which is arranging, that she agrees to turn off the microphones for the opponent when the other person is speaking.

Harris is doing this, despite the fact that she and her staff believe it is to her disadvantage. It makes a more in-depth exchange of replies between the candidates more difficult, according to Harris' side.

But they are still agreeing to it, according to a letter that AP has taken part of, in order not to risk Trump otherwise pulling out of the debate.

Prior to President Joe Biden's TV debate with Donald Trump at the end of June, it was Biden who demanded muted microphones, but the Democrats' feeling was that it made Trump appear more sensible and restrained than usual. And Biden's difficulties in sometimes finding words and completing arguments became even more apparent when it was quiet from the opponent.

That debate marked the beginning of the end for Biden's re-election campaign. He made a miserable performance and showed serious signs of aging. A little over a month later, he dropped out and promoted his Vice President Kamala Harris to the position as the Democratic candidate.
