The National Police Commissioner Petra Lundh welcomes the M proposal for a doubled number of police cameras.

We are extremely positive because we know that camera surveillance is effective, both in terms of prevention and operationally when something happens, she says.

It can be everything from observing descriptions and registration numbers to escape routes. But the cameras are also good afterwards when crimes are being investigated.

We have a number of convictions where camera surveillance was an important part of the evidence.

Lundh notes that the proposal means that the police will set up an additional 2,500 cameras next year, in addition to the 2,500 that are to be in place already this year.

There are already plans for where they want to place the cameras going forward.

The idea is that they should be in strategically important locations where we know that a lot of crimes are committed, and then we will try to get as comprehensive coverage as possible.
