Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stops plans to establish a field hospital in Israel for sick and injured children from Gaza.

The field hospital was initiated by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who wanted to see it as a short-term plan to address the great need for care among Gaza's children.

But Netanyahu's office announced on Thursday that the Prime Minister does not approve of the hospital and that it will therefore not be built.

Gallant responded with a statement saying that his original plan was to transfer Palestinians in need of care through Israel to other countries, but that the plan had failed and that he therefore wanted to establish the field hospital near the border with Gaza.

The Defense Minister has long been at odds with Netanyahu, who, among other things, tried to fire Gallant on one occasion in March 2023 – a decision he was forced to withdraw after widespread protests.

Gallant has since the war in Gaza broke out in October criticized Netanyahu's tactics several times.

Israel allowed 19 sick and injured children to leave Gaza through Israel to receive care in other countries. Then, Mohammed Zaqout, head of Gaza's hospitals, said that over 25,000 patients needed care abroad, including 980 children with cancer.
