On TV broadcasts, explosions can be seen followed by large smoke clouds in the dawn. According to the Lebanese state news agency NNA, Israel carried out at least ten attacks on the southern suburbs of the capital early on Friday morning.
The attacks caused massive destruction in the targeted areas, reports NNA. Dozens of buildings are said to have been leveled to the ground and several fires are reported to have broken out.
The Israeli army had previously issued evacuation orders for buildings in the area, but has not commented on the attack. The suburb of al-Dahiya is generally considered one of the strongest strongholds of the Shia militia Hezbollah.
The attacks took place a day after a meeting between Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the US envoy Brett McGurk, where a ceasefire in Lebanon was discussed. Crucial is that an agreement ensures Israel's security and that threats to the country cease, Netanyahu's office stated after the meeting.
At the same time, Thailand announced that four of the five people killed in a rocket attack on northern Israel on Thursday were Thai citizens.
On Thursday, two more people were killed in a Hezbollah attack at an olive grove in northern Israel. In Lebanon, at least eight people were killed the same day.
