On the third attempt, it was finally a yes to offshore wind power in Söderhamn.
In the referendum, held in conjunction with the EU election, 51 per cent voted yes, 43 per cent voted no, and 6 per cent chose the abstain option, according to the result of the vote count, which was clear by Wednesday afternoon, reports SVT Gävleborg.
This is the third time the people of Söderhamn have voted on offshore wind power. This time, the voter turnout was 46 per cent of those eligible to vote.
Since the referendum is only advisory, it is up to Söderhamn's local politicians to make the formal decisions on wind power establishment, a decision expected to be made after the summer.
The wind power plans have been debated for years, and the municipal residents voted on two wind farms as recently as 2022 in two separate referendums. A narrow majority voted no, and one of the projects was later also rejected by the municipality.
