The USA has negotiated the release of a total of 135 prisoners in Nicaragua, according to the White House.
Among the 135, described by the USA as "unjustly imprisoned political prisoners", are students, members of religious groups and others who, according to the USA, "pose a threat to the authoritarian regime" under President Daniel Ortega.
Guatemala has agreed to receive the released prisoners, with the first having arrived in the country. They will be given the opportunity to apply to move to the USA.
In February last year, over 200 political prisoners were flown from Nicaragua to the USA. They were later offered Spanish citizenship.
In August this year, Nicaragua ordered 1,500 individual organizations, many of them focused on aid or human rights, to shut down their operations. The decision is seen as part of the government's attempt to suppress all opposition.
