Norway is to receive patients from Gaza, announces Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap).

The decision is said to have been made following a request from the WHO.

Norway will participate in the international effort to help Palestinians in need of hospital treatment, he says to VG.

In total, around 20 patients with relatives may be flown to Norway to receive hospital care in the country. When this will happen is still unclear – many practical and security-related questions remain, according to the Prime Minister.

Transporting patients from a war zone to hospitals in other countries is not easy, he notes.

The decision was made after the World Health Organisation WHO asked Norway and other countries for help in a "very critical situation", according to Gahr Støre in VG.

On-site assistance is still priority one, he stresses.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza is catastrophic. The healthcare system has collapsed. Therefore, the most important thing Norway can do is to support healthcare work and humanitarian efforts in Gaza and surrounding areas, for example by strengthening hospitals.
