Firefighters in Greece are working hard to combat several forest fires in different parts of the country on Sunday.

Greece has already been hit by several forest fires, despite warnings that the worst summer heat has not yet arrived.

A forest fire started on Sunday morning in connection with strong winds in the area of Keratéa, about three miles southeast of Athens. At least four houses and several cars are said to have been completely destroyed in the fire.

A second fire with rapid spread began later north of the capital near the suburb of Stamáta.

In total, around 230 firefighters are working to combat the two fires. They have 17 aircraft and 12 helicopters at their disposal, according to the rescue service.

Residents in several districts have been urged to evacuate.

Another fire has broken out in an industrial area in Ritsona, near the island of Evia (Euboia).

Black smoke was seen in the sky above Ritsona after the fire started in a recycling factory and burned various flammable materials on the site, including tires and mattresses.

The fire is also said to have approached a refugee camp, but local media claim that it is not in danger.

The risk of forest fires is high in several regions of the country, according to a fire risk map issued by the Civil Protection Department.

On Saturday, more than 40 forest fires broke out in the country, according to sources.
