At least 24 dead, cars swept away and people forced up onto roofs. The tropical storm Trami has struck northeastern Philippines, causing floods and landslides.

Schools and authorities on the island of Luzon are closed, while rescue efforts are underway. In some villages, motorboats are being used to reach those stranded in the water. Most of those who have died have drowned, and the number is feared to rise when police and rescue services can reach areas blocked by the storm.

The majority of the deaths have been confirmed in the Bikol region, southeast of Manila, where at least 20 people have perished.

The storm is now blowing westward, towards the South China Sea.
