Police have fired tear gas at demonstrators in Calcutta (Kolkata) in India since extensive protests broke out against the authorities' actions in a case of gang rape that ended in murder.
The crime took place earlier in August, when a provincial doctor in Calcutta was subjected to sexual violence and then murdered. The case has caused outrage and has led to large-scale protests – not least from India's ruling party, which is in opposition in the province of West Bengal in the northeastern part of the country.
In Tuesday's protests, politicians' resignations were demanded due to the way the crime investigation was conducted.
The murder of the 31-year-old doctor, who worked at a hospital in the provincial capital Calcutta, has also sparked broader criticism of the recurring violence that many women are subjected to in India.
The police's violent action came after demonstrators belonging to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party BJP (Bharatiya Janata) broke through a police cordon. The police had banned the demonstration.
