The suspected double murder after the car fire in Malmö is being taken over by the national unit against international and organized crime.

The car was rented in Denmark by two individuals residing in the United Kingdom, says prosecutor Magnus Pettersson.

The international connection means that the prosecutor's office's international unit has taken over the work.

Some of the evidence that will be in this investigation, and some of the investigative measures that need to be taken, are things that exist and will be carried out abroad, says Magnus Pettersson.

Not identified

Despite the two individuals who rented the car being British citizens, the prosecutor does not want to confirm that it concerns the two British citizens reported missing in Sweden.

The identity of the two bodies found in the car has not been established yet, says Magnus Pettersson.

The police and prosecutor are still waiting for a formal response from the forensic examination.

It's too early to say if they were in the car, says Kerstin Gossé, press spokesperson for the police in Malmö.

Multiple authority contacts

The British Foreign Office has previously told TT that they are in contact with Swedish authorities and are supporting the families of the missing men. At the same time, British police have confirmed that they have been in contact with Swedish colleagues and Interpol.

The Swedish police also confirm that they are in contact with British police about the two missing Britons.

The bodies were found after a car fire in an industrial area in Malmö on Sunday, July 14. The incident is being investigated as suspected double murder.

The police are still seeking tips about the burned-out car, which was a Danish-registered Toyota RAV4. According to several media outlets, it was rented at Kastrup Airport a few hours before the rescue service received the alarm.
