The contract extends to June 2027 and he will join on November 11. United recently sacked Erik ten Hag and is currently led by Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Amorim has been on Manchester United's radar for a long time as a possible replacement for the Dutchman ten Hag.
The 39-year-old has done an excellent job during his four years as coach for Sporting and, among other things, led the club to two Portuguese league titles. In total, he has won five titles with the club since taking over in March 2020.
After Sporting's cup match against Nacional on Tuesday, Amorim was asked if it was his last match as coach for the club.
Recruited Gyökeres
No one knows if this was my farewell match. Nothing is certain yet, Amorim replied.
Sporting plays again tonight, in the league against Estrela at home.
Amorim was highly involved in Sporting recruiting Viktor Gyökeres from Coventry in the summer of 2023. Since then, the Swedish national team player has developed into one of European football's top scorers.
Gyökeres has on several occasions spoken highly of his coach.
The striker has also pointed out that he wants to move forward in his career over time. That he is already being linked to a future transfer to United is fully logical considering Amorim's step.
One of the youngest
At 39 years old, Amorim will become one of the Premier League's youngest managers and the youngest on a permanent basis at United since the 1960s. For colleague Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, age is irrelevant.
Knowledge is knowledge. If you have the ability, age plays no role. The most important thing is talent. If you're good enough, age doesn't matter, Guardiola said earlier in the week.
Manchester United faces Chelsea at home at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Then the team will be led by Ruud van Nistelrooy. He will be in charge of United until Amorim installs himself in Manchester with a planned start on Monday, November 11.
Then a national team break of one and a half weeks awaits. Amorim's first match will be a visit to Portman Road and the league match against bottom team Ipswich on November 24.
With Ruud van Nistelrooy in charge, United knocked Leicester out of the league cup with 5–2 earlier in the week.
The former star striker has said he would like to stay in some position in the club. A discussion with the club and Amorim awaits.
