Private property owners in the regions of Stockholm and Gotland want to raise the rent by a record amount next year – up to 15.4 percent, reports Home and Rent.

The trade organization Fastighetsägarna Stockholm motivates the demand with the increased costs of the landlords.

"If we want to have many and well-maintained rental apartments also in the future, the costs must be distributed in a more reasonable way", writes chief negotiator Nathalie Brard in an email to the newspaper.

The Tenants' Association in Region Stockholm dismisses the level as "completely unreasonable".

It's totally absurd and detached from reality, says chairman Susanne Sjöblom to Home and Rent.

The demand affects approximately 60,000 apartments and comes two months earlier than usual. According to Fastighetsägarna Stockholm, they want to finalize the negotiations before the turn of the year to avoid retroactive rent increases.

Before 2024, the demand was for rent increases of 12 percent. After a decision by a special arbitrator, the increase ultimately landed at 5.8 percent.
