The Government and the Sweden Democrats agree to abolish the so-called "malus" for motorhomes. It was introduced by the red-green government in 2018 and means a higher vehicle tax for petrol- and diesel-driven motorhomes.
Since the summer of 2022, the tax has been increased.
The tax relief proposed by the Government is estimated to amount to approximately 20,500 kronor per year for newly registered motorhomes, but many do not drive their motorhomes all year round, and therefore the tax will be around 6,000-7,000 kronor lower for a vehicle that is in use on average 30 percent of the year.
This tax is completely misguided. As a consumer, there is no more environmentally friendly alternative to driving a vehicle. You cannot choose an electrically driven motorhome because there are none, says Thomas Morell, traffic policy spokesperson for the Sweden Democrats.
Morell says that the proposal will also benefit workshops, the camping industry, and the tourism industry.
The proposal is estimated to marginally increase emissions, according to the Ministry of Finance's memorandum. It also appears that the reduced tax will primarily affect households with "relatively high incomes".
Of course, it does. But there are also those with normal incomes who will benefit, says Morell.
The proposal is estimated to cost the state 90 million kronor per year and is proposed to come into effect on February 1, 2025.
