Royal Wedding in Norway: "Embarrassing"

"Embarrassing" and "comical". That's how Saturday's royal wedding in Geiranger, Norway, is largely described.

Few things were traditional when Princess Märtha Louise married her shaman Durek Verrett in Geiranger. The photo rights were sold to the British magazine Hello Magazine and the TV rights to Netflix, which is making a documentary about the couple. This resulted in the bridal couple trying to hide behind sheets to avoid being caught on camera by others. Pictures from the banquet hall leaked out before the wedding ceremony after a hotel guest entered the hall, and on the first published picture of Märtha Louise in her wedding dress by Norwegian TV2, she was seen crouching under a sheet.

The word that fits best is probably 'comical', says royal expert Trond Norén Isaksen to TV2 about the festivities.

And most Norwegian commentators agree with him. Aftenposten calls it a "game for the Netflix galleries".

"But had the press not been there, the Netflix documentary would have missed a central part of the action: the chaos", writes the newspaper's Therese Sollien.

VG's commentator Astrid Meland writes that it was embarrassing to see the princess making her way through tunnels of sheets, but that the "royal house delivers" in a very turbulent time.

"They manage to turn even a crazy journey like the wedding trip in Geiranger into a festive event worthy of a king".
