A Russian citizen who has been internationally wanted for nine years, suspected of terrorist crimes, has been arrested in Sweden, according to Smålandsposten.

As regards suspicions, and what this is fundamentally about, it is covered by strong secrecy, says prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist to TT.

According to Smålandsposten's information, the Russian citizen was arrested at a vehicle checkpoint in Ljungby earlier in the week.

A Russian court issued an arrest warrant against the man, who is in his 40s, as early as 2015. This according to a confidential international wanted notice that the newspaper has taken part of.

According to the wanted notice, the man is suspected of terrorist crimes and participating in a terrorist organisation in Moscow between 2013 and 2014.

When TT reaches Mats Ljungqvist, chief prosecutor at the National Security Unit and the one leading the case according to Smålandsposten, he does not want to comment on the matter, citing "extremely strong secrecy".

But some things he can confirm.

A person has been arrested and is being detained. Växjö District Court has confirmed the detention. This is being handled according to very special rules, so it's not a matter of a detention hearing, he says, and adds:

He will be detained for a significant period of time according to special rules.

The Security Service is asked if they can confirm the information that a Russian terrorist suspect has been arrested.

We are aware that a man has been arrested in southern Sweden. Otherwise, we refer entirely to the prosecutor, says Gabriel Wernstedt, press spokesperson at the Security Service.
