Pakistan's most populous province is closing all schools and universities on Friday, as a consequence of the unrest that erupted in connection with student protests being met with tear gas and batons on Thursday.

After a rumor about a rape on a campus in Lahore last weekend spread on social media, extensive protests have shaken several Pakistani cities over the past week.

According to, among others, the police, the information is disinformation, as no victim of rape has come forward.

The closure applies to preschools to universities and affects around 26 million students in the province of Punjab.

380 people have been arrested for vandalism and arson during the protests on Thursday.
