The UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer gets a rebuke from his own party colleagues at Labour's congress, where his plan to withdraw a benefit for around ten million pensioners was voted down.

The contribution to heating homes during the winter has previously applied to all pensioners, but Starmer now wants to means-test the contribution and direct it to the poorer pensioners. He claims that the measure would help to fill a "black hole" of nearly 22 billion pounds, equivalent to approximately 300 billion kronor, in the state treasury.

According to Starmer, who took office as Prime Minister in July, the UK must now engage in a "common struggle" to address the consequences of 14 years of conservative rule.

The congress decision is not binding.
