The Kremlin strikes back at Zelensky's speech

Trying to force Russia to peace would be a "fatal mistake", according to the Kremlin. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj emphasized before the UN Security Council that it is the only possible way forward.

It is a fundamental misunderstanding that will inevitably have consequences for the regime in Kiev, says President Vladimir Putin's spokesperson Dmitrij Peskov, according to the country's state-controlled media.

He is sticking to the Kremlin's line that the so-called special operation – the invasion war against the neighboring country – must be completed, by Russia ultimately getting to dictate the terms for Ukraine's future and cooperation:

Russia is for peace, but on the condition that its stability is ensured and the goals of the military special operation are achieved.

At an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday evening, Ukraine's President Zelensky said that the international community must pressure Russia to the negotiating table.

We know that some people in the world want to talk to Putin and hear about how angry he is because we are defending our people, said Zelensky.

Zelensky will meet with President Joe Biden and others during his visit to the USA to seek support for a Ukrainian plan for how the war can be ended.

On Wednesday, Russia's military announced that it had "liberated" two more smaller communities in the intense fighting ongoing in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.
