The Spanish government has updated its goals for renewable energy. 81 percent of the country's energy is to be green by 2030 at the latest.
According to the plan Spain has submitted to the EU Commission, the government is committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 32 percent compared to 1990 levels. The previous goal was to reduce emissions by 23 percent.
To succeed, the government is thus promising to increase the level of renewable energy from 74 to 81 percent.
It's an ambitious but achievable goal, says Teresa Ribera – Spain's former climate minister and now a candidate to become an EU commissioner responsible for a "clean and fair transition".
Last year, more than half of all Spanish-produced energy was renewable, including 23 percent from wind power.
