"Shogun" can make TV history tonight

"Shogun" is expected to dominate at the Emmy Awards on Monday night, Swedish time. It could be the first time in the prestigious TV gala's history that a non-English language production takes home the finest prize, for best drama series.

"Shogun" has received a total of 25 nominations for the TV world's equivalent of the film Oscars. The drama series, set in war-torn 17th-century Japan, is produced by the American TV channel FX, but the dialogue is mostly in Japanese.

The series, which can be seen on Disney+ in Sweden, is a new version of the classic 1980s series starring Richard Chamberlain in the lead role and became such a success that it will get a continuation. Although it wasn't planned from the start, a second season is now being produced.

Other series whose actors are expected to hold acceptance speeches at the gala are the restaurant drama "The Bear", the mystery comedy "Only Murders in the Building", and the acclaimed Netflix thriller "Baby Reindeer". Also, Larry David is expected to be honored for the final season of the comedy series "Curb Your Enthusiasm".

The actors, father and son Eugene and Dan Levy, will host the gala in Los Angeles. In addition to the awards ceremony, a lot of nostalgia is planned, including a tribute to "Saturday Night Live" – the legendary sketch series that will enter its 50th season this fall.

Furthermore, the industry magazine Variety reports that the 25th anniversary of the political drama series "The West Wing" will be celebrated with several of the series' stars in attendance.
