The Japanese giant oyster is a concern along the West Coast. Now, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management hopes for a law change that can help get rid of the oyster.

The Japanese giant oyster, or Pacific oyster, is an invasive species that threatens European oysters. It also causes painful injuries, primarily to the feet of bathers.

However, a change to the Fisheries Act can make it easier to remove the razor-sharp oysters, reports P4 Väst.

In the government's marine proposal, which was presented earlier this summer, it is stated that the government wants to further investigate the issue.

According to the current law, oysters can only be picked with or after permission from the landowner or the one who has fishing rights in the area.

When the Fisheries Act was written, there was only one type of oyster here in Bohuslän, so one didn't specify which type it was, says Martin Rydgren, investigator at the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, to P4 Väst.
