Several heavy Democrats are rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris, after President Joe Biden dropped out of his re-election campaign.

"She is tough, fearless and determined", says California Governor Gavin Newsom, who himself has been mentioned in speculations about who can take over.

About half an hour after President Joe Biden announced that he was dropping out of his re-election campaign, he also announced his support for the Vice President as the new presidential candidate.

And Harris herself immediately announced that she is ready to take over.

“I am honored by the President's support and my goal is to earn and win the nomination", said Harris in a statement.

Several top Democrats have since rallied behind the Vice President.

Taking on Trump

California Governor Gavin Newsom, mentioned in speculations about a new presidential candidate, writes on X that Harris is the right one to take on Donald Trump.

Even Pete Buttigieg, who challenged both Biden and Harris for the nomination in 2020, announces his support. So does Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, known as one of the progressive voices within the party, backing the Vice President.

"Now more than ever, it is crucial that our party and our country quickly unite to defeat Donald Trump and the threat to American democracy", she writes.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly – all from key swing states – have also expressed support.

Presidential Candidate to be Nominated

The Democratic Party leadership says in a statement that the American people will soon find out how the process of nominating a new presidential candidate will look like.

"The party will initiate an open and orderly process to go forward with a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November", writes Chairman Jaime Harrison in a statement.

The Democratic Convention, where the presidential candidate is formally nominated, will be held on August 19-22 in Chicago.

After hastily called meetings, delegates to the convention appointed in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee have already decided to support Harris, according to AP.
