Using blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies in this context is, however, unusual, especially among larger, established companies.
In a comment to the gaming site IGN, Ubisoft says that the goal is to "explore new ways of playing" and that they want to "increase the value for players" through "ownership".
Ubisoft has had a tough economic year after several titles, including Swedish-developed "Star Wars Outlaws", did not reach the expected heights. Since the turn of the year, the stock value has plummeted by more than 40 percent.
The company's quarterly report is expected on Wednesday.
