Three people were killed and several injured in Friday's attack on a festival in German Solingen. An intense manhunt for a perpetrator began, and late on Saturday evening, a person could be arrested, suspected of the crime.

The man, according to German media a 26-year-old Syrian who came to Germany in December 2022, confessed to the crime in police custody after surrendering himself, the police announced in a press release on Sunday.

"I am the one you are looking for", the man is said to have said at the time of the arrest, according to police sources. According to federal prosecutors, the man is being investigated, among other things, for murder, attempted murder, and participation in a foreign terrorist organization. He was remanded in custody on Sunday.

The 26-year-old, the third to be arrested, is not known in Islamist circles – but the terrorist organization IS has taken responsibility for the attack.

The man has been arrested on suspicion of crime before, the police state without giving further details.

The other two who were arrested are not believed to have been perpetrators. One of them is a 15-year-old boy who is suspected of having known about the attack, without informing the authorities, according to the police.

The act is, according to IS, a "revenge" for Muslims "in Palestine and everywhere".
