On Thursday, the women's Olympic football tournament kicked off in Paris.

The reigning Olympic champions Canada won their premiere against New Zealand.

But the Swedish duo in Australia suffered a defeat.

Canada won 2–1 after turning around an early 1–0 deficit.

The equalizer was scored by Arsenal player Cloé Lacasse, and Roma forward Évelyne Viens scored the winning goal.

The match was refereed by Swedish referee Tess Olofsson.

The victory came after a storm had been brewing in Canada's national team earlier in the week. On Monday, a drone was discovered hovering above New Zealand's training session, which could be linked to a video analyst in Canada's staff.

The scandal led to Canada's assistant coach Jasmine Mander and video analyst Joseph Lombardi being sent home from the Paris Olympics. Head coach Bev Priestman chose not to be on the sidelines during the match against New Zealand.

German rout

The parallel match between Spain and Japan ended 2–1, after the world champions also managed to turn around a 1–0 deficit to victory.

The goals were scored by Aoba Fujino (Japan), Aitana Bonmatí and Mariona Caldentey (Spain).

Later in the evening, it was time for Germany and Australia to make their Olympic debut. Then, the former went on a rampage.

Germany won 3–0 against Australia, coached by the Swedish duo Tony Gustavsson and Jens Fjellström.

Meanwhile, Brazil – with icon Marta starting – won 1–0 against Nigeria.

Home nation won

In the evening's final matches, the home nation France faced Colombia. France took the lead 3–0, but Colombia managed to reduce the score to 3–2.

France, however, managed to hold off Colombia's final push, and took a 3–2 victory in front of their supporters.

At the same time, the USA entered the tournament when they faced Zambia. Then, it was an expected American victory. The USA won 3–0, after Zambia also received a red card after just 30 minutes.
