The decision by a judge in California means that the legal process will move on to the next stage, writes Variety. The British woman Fiona Harvey is suing Netflix for $170 million, 1.8 billion kronor, for being portrayed as a convicted stalker in "Baby Reindeer".

In the ruling, Judge Gary Klausner states that "Baby Reindeer" begins with the disclaimer "This is a true story", which viewers must be able to believe. Therefore, Fiona Harvey has sufficient grounds to sue Netflix for how she has been portrayed in the series.

However, the judge dismissed several of Fiona Harvey's claims for compensation and damages, including for copyright infringement.

"Baby Reindeer" is a partially autobiographical miniseries, written by lead actor Richard Gadd, about how a woman, Martha, stalks him. In the series, it is described how Martha is eventually sentenced to prison. Something that never happened in reality.

Fiona Harvey is not directly identified in the series, but her identity became quickly known on the internet since "Baby Reindeer" became a global success last summer. Last week, "Baby Reindeer" was awarded six prizes at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, including for best miniseries.
