The future of the EU's Ukrainian training mission, EU Mam, was one of the topics when the defense ministers of the member states met again after the summer.
This is the most successful training mission that the EU has carried out so far, notes Foreign Minister Josep Borrell.
According to him, they are now agreed on raising their goals and training an additional 15,000 men on top of the 60,000 who are currently estimated to have been trained.
The Ukrainian soldiers are being trained primarily in Poland but also in other EU countries. From the Ukrainian side, there are simultaneously wishes for training also within Ukraine – which is, however, significantly more controversial.
For the time being, the EU is content with setting up a smaller coordination center in Kiev to achieve better coordination.
Defense Minister Pål Jonson (The Moderate Party) is among those who do not want to rule out European instructors on site – but emphasizes that unity is important.
We think that such a decision, of course, must be made with a great deal of consensus within the EU, says Jonson in Brussels.
