Criticism of the bodyguard protection has been extensive after the assassination attempt on US ex-president Donald Trump at a campaign meeting over the weekend. But the head of Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, will not resign – despite several Republicans demanding it.

I plan to continue, she says in an interview with ABC News.

Pressure is mounting on Secret Service to explain what went wrong in the hours and minutes before a armed man opened fire from a roof and shot Trump on Saturday. Cheatle calls the event "unacceptable".

The responsibility lies with me, she says in the interview.

It's me who is the head of Secret Service, I must ensure that we conduct an investigation and the personnel get the resources they need.

According to Cheatle, it was "very short time" between Thomas Matthew Crooks being identified as a potential suspect shooter and him firing his weapon.
