World number one Iga Swiatek, Poland, is out of the Olympic Games tennis already in the semifinal.

The 23-year-old surprisingly lost to Zheng Qinwen.

The Chinese player won in two straight sets, 6–2, 7–5.

I'm so glad I could create history for Chinese tennis, says Zheng, who has secured a Chinese Olympic medal in tennis, according to AFP and continues:

But of course, I may have created history, but I don't want to slow down now.

Thus, there will be no repetition of the success at Roland-Garros from earlier this year, when the world number one took home her fourth consecutive Grand Slam title on the clay in Paris.

Swiatek was a big favorite to win the tournament, as several top-seeded players had been eliminated early. The next highest ranked of the four remaining was just Zheng Qinwen, who is world number seven.

In the other semifinal, 21-ranked Donna Vekic, Croatia, and 67-ranked Anna Karolina Schmiedlova meet.

Later came the next big upset in the Olympic Games tennis.

The reigning Olympic champion on the men's side, Alexander Zverev (Germany), is out of the tournament already in the quarterfinal.

One of the season's big success players, Lorenzo Mussetti (Italy), beat the German in two straight sets with the scores 7–5, 7–5.

Thus, he advances to the semifinal, where Novak Djokovic, Serbia, awaits. The world number two won his quarterfinal against Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, despite needing medical help for his knee several times during the match.

Someone who did not make it to the semifinal is Casper Ruud. The sixth-ranked Norwegian was eliminated by Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, ranked 19th in the world.

The match was even and ended 6–4, 6–7 (8–10), 6–3, in favor of Auger-Aliassime.

The 23-year-old Canadian is having an impressive Olympic Games. In the third round, he also knocked out fifth-ranked Daniil Medvedev.

Auger-Aliassime will face Spanish Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal, who earlier on Thursday won against American Tommy Paul.
