The Swedish Afghanistan Committee (SAK) is forced to lay off all remaining employees in Afghanistan, a total of 1,400 people, writes Global Bar Magazine.

The reason is that the Taliban, who rule Afghanistan, have prohibited all Swedish activities and organizations from operating in the country after the Quran burnings in Sweden in 2023.

At the same time, the Taliban have initiated a nationalization of the country's school system, which means that the teachers employed by the organization would then transfer to government employment.

In 2018, Swedish aid to Afghanistan amounted to 1.3 billion kronor and the country was then one of Sweden's largest recipient countries.

Besides the Swedish Afghanistan Committee, organizations such as Hand in Hand and Save the Children have operations in Afghanistan. These organizations have, according to reports, not had their operations affected by the Taliban's ban, writes the newspaper.
