The large-scale attack on Israel by the Iran-backed Shia militia Hezbollah and Israel's comprehensive attack on southern Lebanon create concern for further escalation in the region.

The UN peacekeeping force at the border with Israel in southern Lebanon, Unifil, urges all parties to cease fire and refrain from further escalating actions. They describe the recent events as "alarming".

"A return to a pause in hostilities, followed by the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, is the only sustainable way forward," states a statement from the UN agency.

UN Resolution 1701 was drafted to put an end to the war between Israel and Hezbollah as early as 2006.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati held an extraordinary ministerial meeting on Sunday due to the attacks. There, he announced that he had contacted several of "Lebanon's friends" to stop the escalation.

He too believes that the 1701 resolution must be implemented "to stop the Israeli aggression".
