The home nation Germany has secured its place in the quarter-finals of the European Championship. This is clear after they defeated Hungary 2–0.

Once again, one of Germany's super talents was highly involved in the victory. Just like in the European Championship opener against Scotland, 21-year-old Jamal Musiala wrote himself into the score sheet.

It was after a chaotic situation in the Hungarian penalty area, where it seemed like Hungary expected the referee to blow for a foul, that Musiala exploited the situation and scored 1–0, set up by Ilkay Gündogan.

Only minutes later, Hungary was just a hair's breadth from equalising, after a brilliant free kick by Dominik Szoboszlai that Manuel Neuer saved, but only just, as the ball danced just outside the goal line before the Germans could clear.

In added time in the first half, Hungary had their next big chance – again a sharp free kick – but the equaliser that was headed in was ruled out for offside.

Instead, it was Germany who, in the 67th minute, scored again. Gündogan scored his first goal of the tournament when he safely made it 2–0, set up by Maximilian Mittelstädt.

The two wins in the group stage mean that Germany's place in the quarter-finals is secured.
